The Gear S3 is surely Samsung’s best smartwatch and one of the best on the market. It features the design and style of a real watch and combines that with all the smarts you’ll ever need. Notifications are handled elegantly, and the interface is a delight to use. The fitness side of things is particularly impressive too. Unless you’re a hardcore swimmer, you’ll find everything here you need to keep motivated and track your progress.

The screen is large and beautiful to look at, but that’s less of a concern on a smartwatch compared to your phone, which you’ll look at four billion times per day, and while you can pump on the Always On Display, it absolutely sucks the life out of the battery.

The Gear S3 is actually available in two models – the Gear S3 Classic and the Gear S3 Frontier – although there’s no difference in the smart functionality of the two models. I was sent the Frontier model to review. The Frontier is targeted towards those with more active lifestyles and comes with a more weather-resistant silicone band. The Classic errs more towards classic timepiece styling, with its traditional-style crowns and leather strap.

The Samsung Gear S3 is the most aggressively featured smartwatch you can buy for Android phones. It makes calls, plays music, runs apps, tracks steps, shows widgets, sends texts, and lets you pay with your credit card. It’s also waterproof and has a far better interface than Android Wear smartwatches.

The Samsung Gear S3 does one thing well that most other smartwatches fail abysmally at. It has great battery life: if you charge it fully to 100%, it’ll last you for almost five days. Yep, you read that right, FIVE DAYS: that’s nearly four days of normal operation (with the screen in timeout mode and no GPS usage), and then when it hits 5%, more than 24 hours of use in power-save mode.

Where the Gear S3 does impress is in its fitness features. It offers excellent automatic tracking: you only have to walk briskly for a few minutes for the watch to detect the activity and log it. It’ll also quickly catch in if you forget to tell it you’re going for a run. It can even automatically pause its logging for brief stops, such as waiting to cross a road.

Would I recommend the Samsung Gear S3 to an iPhone owner? Absolutely not. But with Android phone owners, the decision is harder. There is no perfect watch right now, just a field of inferior products. Android Wear isn’t a good answer now, although Android Wear 2.0 could provide some promise starting in the next few months. Pebble has been absorbed by Fitbit. Samsung offers some interesting options with the Gear S3, and its ability to be a full phone if you spring for the LTE model could appeal to some people.

The Samsung Gear S3 is not only a smartwatch it is also an outdoor watch and has a number of features that can provide additional information and enhance your experience. One is the Alti/Barometer which can detect your altitude and changes in the weather.

If the ideal smartwatch is one that lets you leave your phone in your pocket — or at home — and still be just as connected, then the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier succeeds more than any other smartwatch, and yet still falls short in some critical areas.
Samsung Gear 3 is considered to be one of the best smartwatches of 2018. You can find out more here…
