The Altec Lansing Orbit MP3 is a good budget portable speaker designed for listening to music on the go. A good battery life, acceptable sound quality, and low price make from it an interesting device.

Altec Lansing claims that the iMT237 Orbit Portable Speaker provides a 360 degree sound field due to its cylindrical shape, but what you’re getting is essentially a mono speaker. After all, for under £30, you can’t expect any fancy surround sound virtualization technology. All the same, as long as your expectations are realistic, the sound it produces is quite reasonable.

Although built to be robust, there’s still a chance of a knock when travelling at the bottom of a bag full of all and sundry so Altec Lansing has provided a neat grey zip-up carry case for additional protection.

It’s not the prettiest speaker out there, nor is it the loudest, but as a way of increasing the sound on your MP3 player, mobile phone or any other device it works simply and effectively.

The understated Orbit iM237 now features an on/off button that lights when the speaker is on. On the earlier model, some people complained that without a light it was easy to forget that the unit was on and the batteries would run down.

You don’t name an iPod speaker system Orbit without a cool design. The Altec Lansing Orbit speaker’s compact and unique round shape fits the bill. Its small, circular shape reminds you more of a planet in solar space than an iPod stereo with 360 degrees sound.
